Searchgirl is released under the MIT License.

What it permits

The MIT License is one of the most permissive open-source licenses. It lets anyone:

• Use the software for any purpose, including commercially.
• Copy, modify and merge it into other projects.
• Publish, distribute, sublicense and sell copies.

The only condition is that the copyright notice and the permission notice be included in all copies or substantial portions of the software. The software is provided “as is”, without warranty of any kind, and the authors are not liable for any claim or damages.

The engine underneath: SearXNG (AGPL-3.0)

The metasearch engine is SearXNG (AGPL-3.0), consumed as a separate service, without modifications, communicating over HTTP. Searchgirl is not a fork: SearXNG remains AGPL-3.0 in its own container, and its license applies to that container.

If you modify SearXNG

Running the official, unmodified SearXNG image alongside Searchgirl imposes nothing on Searchgirl’s MIT code — they are separate programs talking over the network. If you ever modify SearXNG itself, those modifications are AGPL-3.0.

Thanks to the SearXNG community for years of work on private search — Searchgirl would not exist without them.
